Abstract (summary)

Pade presents a text which is a touchstone for the study of Renaissance humanism. This Latin translation of Plutarch’s Life of Dion was made by Guarino Guarini of Verona (1374-1460), who studied Greek in Constantinople under Manuel Chrysoloras (ca. 1350-1415) and became preeminent among one of the first generations to revive the reading of Greek in Italy. It exemplifies the development of the tools and methods that made the corpus of Greek literature available again to literate westerners. Although Guarino rendered several of Plutarch’s Lives into Latin, this one is especially interesting as it is the biography of an ancient ruler who attempted to live out the Platonic ideal of the philosopher-king, translated by a man in close contact with Italian princes who tried to emulate Dion and themselves combined the cultivation of scholarship and rulership, in particular Leonello d’Este, the lord of Ferrara and successively the student and patron of Guarino.
