Item Conditions(2020) Zanbak, Keira; Pacher, ConstanzaConditions is a collection of written works by women, their experiences in life, and their thoughts and views on the world. It features six poems, two short stories, and an interview with author Adrienne Rich. The book is illustrated with imagery of mountains, hot weather, and desserts, settings that are often referenced in the stories. On a deeper level, a theme that runs through the book is that of rejection of traditional expectations of women and femininity. For this reason, motifs like flowers and the colour pink were avoided purposely. The typefaces Playfair Display and Crimson Text were chosen to match the overall feel of beauty that is communicated in this collection, as well as the elegance and quality of the written pieces. The layout was kept traditional to accommodate a wide variety of different types of work included in the collection; large headings and ample white space was used to separate each writing.Item MacEwan Book of the Year poster designs(2019) Zanbak, Keira; Pacher, ConstanzaThese posters were designed to give a visual representation to the book Sweetland, by Michael Crummey, for a project in Typography II. The main idea behind the series of posters was to represent the slow deterioration of everything around Sweetland, and how he tries to hold onto the past and pretend that everything is going well. The type speaks to this concept in that it is peeling and cracking, and starting to disappear from the surface it was painted on due to its age and poor treatment. There is a progression of the deterioration in the posters, with the first one having minimal damage, the second a bit more, and finally at the end, it is the most worn away. It represents how at first things seem to be starting to change and Sweetland wants to prevent that change, but in the process he begins to lose everything he wanted to hold onto.Item Nature of album design(2019) Zanbak, Keira; Pacher, ConstanzaFor this Typography II project, an album cover for the band Nature Of was designed. The main idea behind the choices in the design of the album was to represent how the music conveyed a desire to find balance and to find a way to feel alright. The colours, and the way the papers interact together provide a laid back feeling and a good sense of contrast, which supports the main idea of finding balance. As you go further into the record, the text from the dictionary becomes more and more unreadable, and you have to find different ways to read it that are more unusual, kind of like how in the music things seem more difficult to understand the more they are kept inside. The different types of papers used to create each piece are somewhat like puzzle pieces, with some being more of a rough texture, some being ripped up or missing parts of the page, which once again supports the theme of struggling to find balance.
