Abstract (summary)
We have all heard stories about posttraumatic stress disorder – soldiers returning from combat, firefighters after 9/11, refugees from war-torn countries, police officers on the job. What we rarely hear about are the things that linger in the mind and heart after a police officer retires from years in an occupation that is stressful and dangerous, and often thankless. Do they have trouble adjusting to civilian life? Does the ugliness of the job stay with them?
