Excerpt: "In newspapers, in magazines, and, eventually, in books, expatriates wrote for Americans, for Europeans, and conceived of new ways to write for both groups, illustrating what Daniel Katz sees as 'not a flight from American identity' but, instead, a true 'encounter with it.'"
