- ItemA review of common basketball injuries: lateral ankle and anterior cruciate ligament sprains(2016) Frentz, Danae; Bourheois, Danzelle; Belec, Mathew; Kato, DavidThis research project was a literature review on common injuries in the sport of basketball, specifically the lateral ankle and anterior cruciate ligament sprains. Our goal was to synthesize a research paper that cohesively outlined the mechanisms of injury, immediate treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention for each of the injuries. My colleagues and I were to conduct this research study as if we would use the information gathered to treat potential future clients. Upon the completion of the research paper, we were asked to distill our main findings into a research poster format. The information gathered will greatly assist in our future endeavors in the field of rehab medicine.
- ItemEnvironmental injuries: hyperthermia and hypothermia(2020) McDonald, Amanda; Stubbs, Rebekah; Lartey, Prince; Kokot, ShaeleighEnvironmental injuries are an important type of sport injury to study as they can occur year-round, through a variety of activities, and occur to a broad range of athletic populations. Hyperthermia (a core body temperature above 38.5°C) and hypothermia (a core body temperature below 35°C) are two common environmental injuries that can be life threatening. This research paper examines the mechanisms of how and why these injuries occur and the effect they have on the body. This paper also outlines preventative measures to take, including identifying internal and external predisposing risk factors, as well as ways to treat hyperthermia and hypothermia to return an athlete back to play.
- ItemAlpine skiing injuries: ulnar collateral ligament sprains and tibia fractures(2020) Bronder, Lucas; Savage, Maya; Sempala, Randi; Milligan, Anna-MarieSkiing is an exciting winter sport; however, it is defined as a high-risk sport for significant injuries. Among upper body and lower body injuries, common traumas to the body in downhill skiers are sprains of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), which is part of the thumb joint, and tibia fractures. The analysis and research will outline the following of each injury: • Mechanism of injury • Treatment • Rehabilitation • Prevention.
- ItemRethinking narcissism in sports: advantageous or detrimental to a team’s success?(2022) Gouveia, SamanthaDrawing on literature from personality and social psychology, the role of narcissism continues to be one of the most controversial constructs in sport. Reviewing a broad array of empirical research, this paper aimed at unravelling the effects of narcissism in various sporting elements: the players, the coaches, and the fans. Exploring both the benefits and drawbacks of narcissism, research reveals that narcissism can be valued as either advantageous or detrimental, depending on the component of the game. Reflecting upon the players aspect, narcissistic athletes might be best suited for individual sports as they provide the greatest opportunity for self-enhancement. Simultaneously, while narcissistic players often create major problems for a team, teams must not steer clear of all narcissistic athletes as they seem to be the most dependable performers during “big” games. Shifting towards coaches, research finds that those who exhibit moderate levels of narcissism, maximize leadership effectiveness such as communicating goals successfully with others. Yet, while these ideal levels may contribute to team success, research continues to find that narcissistic coaches severely impact team well-being as they are unable to put the needs of the team above theirs. Finally, despite the aggressiveness expressed by highly identified fans, the benefits of collective narcissism certainly prevail as their powerful presence leads their team to more successful outcomes.
- ItemInclusive education: advantages and overcoming barriers(2023) Volker, Emily; Gupta, Shaelyn; Brown, BrindySchools and other learning environments have increasingly promoted equal educational opportunities among all students in recent years to create more inclusive learning environments. Inclusive education has impactful benefits on all students, not just those with diverse needs, as it is "the gateway to full participation in society" (United Nations, n.d, pg. 3). However, barriers to inclusion such as staff training and funding are necessary to consider in order to create and maintain meaningful, inclusive learning environments. In order to overcome these barriers to inclusive education, educators have been encouraged to integrate aspects of both Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction (DI) to maintain the least restrictive environment while tailoring to individual student needs. The integration of UDL principles into classroom/learning environments promotes inclusion through supports for all students, including those with diverse needs. Educators can utilize strategies like the Three-Block Model of Universal Design for Learning (TBM) and ADAPT to aid them in the integration of UDL.
