The papers in this volume are collected with the purpose, according to the editors, of broadening the perspective in which the most remarkable historical instances of iconoclasm, in Byzantium and the Reformation, are understood. The contributions, although they are not given a synthetic interpretation until the end, more or less succeed in this purpose and constitute a worthwhile contribution to our understanding of the phenomenon of iconoclasm in general and several instances of it in particular.
