The object of this study is the 2004 wave of EU enlargement, which brought into the union a number of 10 new members. Of all historical enlargements of the EU, the 2004 one stands out by far as the largest number of states that joined the EU at a time. From this perspective, the 2004 enlargement represents a unique natural experiment, more apt for empirical investigation than any other accession episode in the history of the European Union.
