Abstract (summary)

This essay was written for Dr. Alain Beauclair’s Philosophy 333 course- Sex and Sexuality. The assignment was an explication paper, meaning my job was to choose one of the preselected passages from the readings and to, well, explicate it for myself. I chose The Second Sex because Simone de Beauvoir’s writing and philosophies were extremely striking and began to redefine how I understand the world just from the preface. This essay is ten pages of my best attempt to flesh out some of the core concepts she covers as I understand them. Primarily, being subjectivity, the Other, recognition, and how Beauvoir demonstrates the way that delicate framework was desecrated to facilitate and maintain the oppression of women and the patriarchy. I also apply and analyze her philosophies under a modern-day context because I believe it’s important to demonstrate for readers what does or does not hold up, and why.
