dc.description.abstract | This essay discusses the impact hegemonic masculinity plays in the presence of the oil sands in Fort McMurray, Alberta. It investigates the ways in which hegemonic masculinity is shaped and maintained by the workplace, how hegemonic masculinity shapes a sense of “community” in towns surrounding the oil sands, and the ways in which hegemonic masculinity impacts the management, safety, and functioning of the workplace and community itself. Originally written for an upper-level sociology course at MacEwan University, this work appears in an open textbook entitled Navigating an Undergraduate Degree in the Social Sciences: Tips and Strategies as a sample paper in Appendix 1. | |
